Perioral Dermatitis Trigger: Steroid cream
Around the time of my first PD breakout a friend of mine had a similar looking breakout on her hands, looking back now she probably had contact Dermatitis. I remember like most of us I just wanted a quick fix, a magic cure to get rid of this thing on my face. One day I foolishly borrowed her steroid cream and I slathered it onto my facial rash. Within four days of applying the cream (almost every hour) the breakout was gone!! Yes I thought but little did I know that using a steroid cream on Perioral Dermatitis is a cardinal sin. It works on the rash, the symptoms subside but as soon as you stop using the steroid cream the rash comes back again, angrier than ever! So foolishly I continued using the steroid cream again and again thinking it was a miracle cream and this vicious cycle continued for 3 months before I went to a dermatologist. Back then (2003) maybe Perioral Dermatitis didn’t have a name as he called it fungal eczema. He gave me pills and cream and sent me on my way. The moral of the story is never use your mates prescribed cream! If your name is not on the tube its not for sharing. If you feel that you might have PD don’t except a steroid cream from a doc, demand a referral to a dermatologist.
