“Don’t judge a book by its cover” a phrase I heard alot growing up but it never really held much meaning. When I was diagnosed with Perioral Dermatitis back in October 2013 (almost 10 yrs after my original breakout) I had lost my trust in doctors and the treatments that they offered. Because so many doctors were telling me I had adult acne, use spot fighting creams and cleansers and you’ll be grand. I wasnt grand, I wasnt healing infact the products the doctor prescribed for me were just making it worse. My immune system was broken after continuous use of medication. I made the decision to try to heal my PD naturally and without creams and antibiotics. Deciding to go clean with my skincare would change the way I looked at products and ingredients forever.
It awakening my mind to a world of toxic chemicals that I was unwillingly inflicting upon myself on a daily basis. You see alot of products on the shelves in our local pharmacy, beauty emporium or even in our grocery store are packed with harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances that are actually harmful to us and with long term use can have serious side effects. You see like many I was totally blind sighted by the “fluffy” packaging and marketing of these products. Where I should have been focusing on the ingredients, I was distracted by the advertising.
Originally I thought Perioral Dermatitis was a curse but deciding to self-heal would actually change my whole entire life. Instead of just endlessly consuming products I now question everything I put on my skin, to what I eat to everything I bring into my home. I have learned that you really shouldn’t judge a product by what you see on the cover but by what actually lies inside. Even the most popular products for sensitive skin are so misleading, they say one thing on the front but not backed up by its ingredients, for me they were often the root of the problem. Through natural skincare and clean nutrition I have cured myself. I want to share my journey of how I went from a product junkie to a carefully curated skincare regime and how I eliminated nasty chemicals from my body and home one by one. I hope along the way I inspire you to make some positive changes in your life. From now on I will be posting about other area’s of my zero waste journey and also talking more about the great Irish businesses out there doing amazing things for us and the planet. But know you can always reach out to me with PD questions or if you just want to have a rant message me.
